Soils description:
- Solid – Asphalt
- Wide horizontal lines – Claystone
- Tight horizontal lines – Shale
- Overlapping vertical and diagonal lines – Silty clay
- Vertical lines – Silty sand
- Half diagonal, half vertical lines – Silty to clayey sand

Symbols and notes:
- Solid black – Standard penetration test – made by driving a split-barrel sampler into the soil be dropping at 140 lb. hammer 30″, in general accordance with ASTM D-1586. Number indicates number of hammer blows per foot (unless otherwise indicated)
- Half white, half black, divided by a diagonal line – Undisturbed California sample – made by driving a ring-lined sampler into the soil by dropping a 140 lb. hammer 30″, in general accordance with ASTM D-3550. Number indicates number of hammer blows per foot (unless otherwise indicated)
- A white triangle pointed down, touching a long horizontal line with a shorter horizontal line below – free water table
- An icon that looks like broken glass or broken brick – depth at which boring caved
- Half white, half black, divided by two diagonal lines making it appear like an X – disturbed bulk sample
- An icon that looks like a screw – auger “cuttings”
- 4.5 – a number that indicates the water content percentage
